Apparently the fine folks at Hornaday have made a slight calculation error during the loading of some of their 500 S&W handgun ammunition, called by some the most powerful handgun ammunition on the market today. The effect of that slight miscalculation is that you can now blow up your handgun (“excessive chamber pressures” in damage reducing spin-speak). Make the jump for the press release.

“I didn’t think I could handle this guy physically, so I fired into the ground,” Fleming told FoxNews.com. “He stopped. He knew I was serious. I was angry … and I was worried that this guy was going to come after me.” That’s how Dennis Fleming describes what got him arrested after finding his home had been burglarized. Grabbing a gun, he went outside only to see Joseph Hebert climbing out his neighbor’s window. And that’s when . . .
Fleming, a 61-year-old grandfather decided he need to announce his presence with authority and put one in the dirt.
“I didn’t know it was illegal [to fire into the ground], but I had to make that guy realize I was serious,” Fleming said. “I’ve got a clean record. I really don’t want to be convicted.”
Fleming held Hebert at gunpoint until the police arrived. Hebert was arrested for burglary and drug possession. And Fleming was taken downtown (or what passes for downtown in Farmington, NH) on a felony reckless conduct charge. They also confiscated his seven rifles and a .38 revolver.
“This homeowner fired at the ground, from all accounts, in a safe direction and held a burglar for police and did things correctly,” [Gun Owners of New Hampshire spokeswoman Penny] Dean told FoxNews.com. “The fact that this man would be charged is an outrage. Burglars in New Hampshire must know it’s open season, since homeowners cannot defend themselves, as evidenced by this case. This is charging the victim.”
We’re willing to wager a box of Hornady .38 JHPs that upon further review, County Attorney Tom Velardi will find a misdemeanor charge that Fleming will be able to plead to as a way to make this thing go away. We certainly hope so. But let this be a lesson to you kids out there. Keep your powder dry unless you’re threatened. And let your attorney talk to the media. Or not.
There’s no doubt in my mind that the producers of Lifetime’s Dance Moms encouraged or at the very least enabled a dance number featuring a leotard of pre-pubescent prancers leaping around with golden guns. Last night’s “Children with Guns” piece was unnecessary, inflammatory and vulgar. Which created exactly the kind of “must see” (i.e. train wreck) TV that makes the reality genre so incredibly profitable. The fact that there hasn’t been a chorus of WTFs coming from the usual gun control advocates (yet) tells you how far we’ve come on the gun rights issue in recent years. Or does it? The complete lack of muzzle control or trigger discipline set the cause back by a good ten years. Either that or reality TV osmosis has made me a drama queen. Again.
I try to make it a point to donate blood as often as possible. I’m marrying an ICU nurse, so I get a second row seat to understanding how important it is to have blood in the system. Normally, I donate on my lunch break so that I can spend the afternoon in my climate controlled office building while taking in gallons of water, cookies, juice, and kudos from my coworkers . . .
With a day off on Monday (President’s Day), I decided to go donate and then head to the range. My range trip was bearable, but I certainly wasn’t on top of my game. My brain seemed to be running at half speed and my fine motor skills went to hell. It turns out being down a pint is an excellent training opportunity.
Here’s the rub. People get shot in DGUs. There aren’t many good opportunities for you to experience a little blood loss in a somewhat controlled fashion. You should be making it a practice to donate blood every 8 weeks anyway. Only 3 out of 100 Americans donate. Why not squeeze in a training opportunity while you save 3 lives?
Disclaimer: You should only give blood if you are healthy enough to do so. If it is your first time donating, go home and monitor yourself. Everyone reacts differently to losing a pint. Know your body before you try to shoot while your dipstick is dry. DO NOT do an intense training session. YOU WILL pass out. Take a spotter/training buddy/friend/non blood donor with you. In fact, get on an alternating schedule with your blood buddy. Spot them when they donate and have them do the same for you. It should go without saying, but if you start to feel crappy, pack your gear and head home.
If gun owners can mobilize to buy a crappy cup of coffee, we can do the same to donate blood and make the best of a great training opportunity.
Yeah, that’s a skateboard. It’s called the Santa Cruz Cruzer. Not that any unintended hijinks would ensue if you actually walked down the Santa Cruz pier carrying one. No, none at all. According to the specs, the board is, yes, 7.62 inches wide. Curiously, though, it’s only 32.8 inches long. Would 6.2 inches more have been too much, brah? [h/t everydaynodaysoff.com]
