LGR

Destroy the last of the registry data, that is.  And none too soon.

The Supreme Court (a gaggle of red ‘roos that I freely admit I rarely have any use for) has finally gotten something right and ruled 5-4 that the feds have no obligation to hand over the LGR data, finally putting the last nail in the coffin of the great Canadian white elephant.

This means that if Quebec wants a provincial boondoggle of their own to match the federal one, they’re damn well going to have to start from scratch (which, bizarrely enough, they say they’re going to do).  Good luck with that.

Now all we need to do is sit back and enjoy the Large Ham Theatre® that will be coming from the usual suspects, promising doom and destruction from the loss of their beloved placebo.

Gun owners challenge feds over firearms program costs, transparency, dispute registry has been destroyed

Firearms owners who backed Prime Minister Stephen Harper through a decade of battling against the federal firearms registry are now challenging his government in court and turning against the Conservatives over transparency about ongoing firearms program costs and allegations the government has not yet destroyed the registry for rifles and shotguns.

PARLIAMENT HILL—Firearms owners who backed Prime Minister Stephen Harper through a decade of battling against the federal firearms registry are now challenging his government in court and turning against the Conservatives over transparency about ongoing firearms program costs and allegations the government has not yet destroyed the registry for rifles and shotguns.

Part of the confrontation will take place in a Federal Court hearing in Ottawa on Sept. 19, when a lawyer for the National Firearms Association will argue the Federal Registrar of Firearms, the Firearms Commissioner of Canada, and RCMP Commissioner Robert Paulson are illegally collecting information about rifle and shotgun owners in Quebec despite a Quebec Superior Court ruling earlier this summer that the province had no legal right to retain information about gun owners in the province that had been collected in the federal registry. You’d think they’d get it through their heads by now…

MONTREAL — For the second time in less than a month, Quebec has lost a bid to protect data on gun owners from being destroyed.

A ruling on Tuesday by the Quebec Court of Appeal reaffirmed the federal government’s right to delete names, addresses, phone numbers and registration numbers of Quebecers who own hunting weapons.

MONTREAL — A Quebec court has sided with the Harper government: It says the province has no right to the federal long-gun registry data.

Quebec’s highest court has ruled against the provincial government, which is trying to save data for that province from being destroyed.

In its verdict, the Quebec Court of Appeal also ruled that the provincial government should pay the court costs for the case.

marvinThere was supposed to be an earth-shattering kaboom!

Well, it’s been over a year now since the LGR was taken out and shot (in most places, anyway).  So where’s all the mayhem the gun grabbers promised would happen if we took away their Precious?  Skyrocketing school shootings, fender bender shootouts, stray bullets turning corners to kill innocent children, morgues across the country filled to overflowing with the victims of the Evil Gun Lobby®?

Where’s the kaboom?

Well?  Where the hell is it?? Continue reading »
